Hanging with the kids at DIA
July 02, 2008
So you are stuck at the airport.
With kids.
OH. MY. WORD.
But never fear! We actually have a really kid friendly airport with Denver International Airport, and here are some great ideas for things to do to pass the time before your flight.
Watch The Water Fountain Mountain - Located in the center of the airport, this water "sculpture" is meant to visually represent the Rocky Mountains. It's right near where arriving flights come up from the tunnels, as well. So it's a great place to park with the kids, let them stretch their legs and marvel and what water can do.
Ride The Happy Train - That's we like to call the shuttle train between concourses. The Happy Train. Because, seriously! It's so happy! And now that local celebrities are voicing the exit and entrance messages, it's even happier! Either way, those trains are fun to ride back and forth between terminals to kill time AND there is even kinetic art in the tunnels for little eyes to be fascinated with.
Scoot on the People Movers - One thing that is nice about having an airport that is, frankly, HUGE - is that we have lots of room. So, generally the center section of the people movers are pretty open. Meaning the kids have a place to play. Just try to stay out of the way of travelers - remember: stand right, walk left!
Go on an Art Walk - When the airport was built, a percentage of the building costs were required to be allocated to public art. This makes our airport bee-uuu-ti-ful. There are sculptures, mosaics (including ones only recognizable from up high) and paintings, everywhere. Go 'round and see what your child likes, doesn't like (and why) about each one.
Bird Watching - I have NO IDEA how they get in there, but somehow, birds make their way into the big tent. And fly around! We like to sit and watch for them while enjoying a preflight snack on the upper balcony. Because who else in the country has a roof like we do at DIA? Add birds? Now that's awesome.
What else do you like to do with your children at the airport?
