Make Holiday Cards With The Kids!

December 05, 2008

It's that time of the year, right? Time to get those holiday cards in order. Well, except for me, the process started back in September. I actually put up a post on my personal blog looking for input on how to go about holiday cards this year. Because 1) the sheer number of cards was getting out of hand 2) so many people in my life "see" us on a daily basis through the magic of the internet (so, what's the point?) and 3) did I really want to kill all those trees???

The answers that came back were a gentle reassurance that yes, I did want to kill trees. Erm. I mean, maybe a less amount of trees - but that Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa and all the holiday celebrations during this season were worth the effort. And CERTAINLY the people in my life were worth the effort.

So, we compromised and did 4x6 postcards this year, with a photo that no one has seen as yet. So: less trees, less hassle, but still more holiday cheer.

But what else did I do? I got Declan involved in the process. He's 6 now, so he definitely had some opinions - which made the experience more rich for all of us, and I think it shows in the photo that ended up being our winner.

But even if he was younger, his opinions still bring the kids into the process.

What if you don't have a photo you like? How about an awesome drawing that your child did this year? Scan *that* and stuff it in your holiday card this year! So fun!

But you know what else we did? Seeing as I am supposed to be all high-tech and stuff? We have recorded a holiday song, on video, and it will be posted up on the net, ready for our family and friends when they get their holiday postcards. And we printed the URL on the backside of the cards with a note that says "our present to you!"

What could be more heartfelt than a 6 year old singing his heart out for Christmas???
