A Great Time For Giving

December 15, 2008

I feel so fortunate. Right now, in general, my family is financially secure and we are doing OK. Sure, we are not rich, but as I watch the news and see the economic trauma around the country, I can't help but wonder what else we can do to help others - and in turn, teach my son the value of charity as well. Tis the season and all, right?

But how do we go about it?

Donate Money
We already have a rule in place that of any money he receives, 1/2 goes to savings, 1/4 goes to charity and 1/4 is the amount he can spend on what he wants. This way he understands that not all money goes straight to *his* back pocket, and he knows form the beginning that money should go to help others. And um, help that college fun too!

Donate Time
We have not been able to do this yet, but we really would like to spend a holiday at a homeless shelter or retirement home one year. It will be soon, I promise. I think it is important for Declan to understand that not everyone has everything we do, and also that it's important to lend a hand.

Donate Old Toys
Spend some time before Christmas or Hanukkah and ask your child to select toys that they would be willing to donate. This not only clears some of your clutter, it helps them feel good about themselves AND helps a deserving child have some holiday cheer!

What other ways do you teach your childrn about charity?
