Sing Your Way Through The Day!

March 02, 2009

So, OK maybe with everything that is going on with the economy, not everyone has the money for music classes right now, huh? The good news is, there is music all around us! On the TV, on our CDs, and on the radio. And that doesn't even mean you have to find the "kiddie" music. In fact, I have a strict rule that NO KIDS MUSIC is EVER played in my car. Sorry, Declan, that is MY DOMAIN. Of course, that also doesn't mean I am playing any of my tunes with the "EXPLICIT" warnings for his tender ears - there is plenty of middle ground.

And kids just love to sing and dance along!

At the very young ages, it's all about repetition and movement. So find the songs that repeat themselves and are upbeat so they can shake those little booties. Below is one of my little nephew's very favorite's: "Say Hey I Love You" by Michael Franti and Spearhead.

Infectious, isn't it?

So get in there, find some songs you both love, put them on repeat and sing along!

Or maybe you are NOT used to singing out in public, even if it's in front of your child? Just turn that music up louder, and let the original artist do the work. Slowly you will get over your stage fright and sing just as loud and off-key as your toddler is doing!

January 27, 2009

Time flies so fast doesn't it? Believe me, I know. Declan is 6 and a half now, and halfway through 1st grade. The changes over the past few years have been astounding. And I know many of you are not even thinking about preschool, much less Kindergarten or 1st grade. So NOW is the time to get all those activities in. The ones you can't find the time for later when school and other friends and  Read more...

Getting Kids To Actually Keep Track

January 15, 2009

As we talked about yesterday , it's time to try journaling, scrapbooking, or SOME form of diary that suits the style of your child. Therein lies the key! Figure out what works for your child! Do they like to draw? Then a more artistic, scrapbook-style memoir is appropriate. Maybe you even just get a portfolio style sleeve to slip all their artwork in and not make it all that formal. Something  Read more...

Rock Out With Your Tot (For The Holidays)

December 12, 2008

I am a huge music fan, so it's no surprise that I love holiday music just as much. I do have a strict rule that we can't start listening to it until Thanksgiving weekend, but after that - all bets are off! So, at 6, Declan is already used to and has many holiday music faves himself. Here are some of our family favorites to listen to this time of year, by our favorite artist's rendition of that  Read more...

Make Holiday Cards With The Kids!

December 05, 2008

It's that time of the year, right? Time to get those holiday cards in order. Well, except for me, the process started back in September. I actually put up a post on my personal blog looking for input on how to go about holiday cards this year. Because 1) the sheer number of cards was getting out of hand 2) so many people in my life "see" us on a daily basis through the magic of the internet (so,  Read more...

So, it's THAT time. Time to call in a babysitter and go out on your own with your significant other. But you haven't done it in SO LONG, you have NO IDEA where to go. That's OK, let's use this post to give a few ideas and let others bring on some ideas of their own. Denver is full of great nightlife, restaurants and entertainment options - and many of them DO NOT involve Barney! Take In A Play  Read more...

Summery Songs Both You AND They Will Love

August 06, 2008

I have a rule for the car. No kids music. Sorry Declan, but that is where my mothering ends. The car is about ME and MY music. OK, sure, I have learned to share with my husband and in turn, a leeeetle bit with my son. But still. NO KIDDIE MUSIC. That doesn't mean the music can't be fun for a young one though. Here are a bunch of songs that make me think of summer (whether they are actually about  Read more...

Singing Outside The Box

July 28, 2008

I have been amazed at the things Declan has been doing in summer camp this year. Truly. They have been putting on plays, swimming every week, and of COURSE - doing the obligatory *massive* amounts of arts & crafts. But his teachers have really been thinking outside the box, especially as far as kid involvement and using their own talents to make this summer special for the children. For  Read more...

Two Great Ways To Go West

July 18, 2008

I have jokes several times about how a friend of mine considers Denver as part of the midwest and I think it is solidly part of the west, right? Well, the National WESTern Stock show every January notwithstanding, there are two events happening around these parts this summer to help prove my point. Buffalo Bill Days July 23-27, 2008 Golden, Colorado You don't get any more "wild west" than  Read more...

Summer Music Playlist

July 15, 2008

It's summer alright. And whether you are an adult or a little one, music is always part of summer, right? How do we incorporate music into that summer-time vibe? Well, the easiest one to start with is the Mile High Music Fest . I have been talking about this for weeks, huh? Well, officially, this will be the last time I mention it since it's happening this weekend. Declan will finally attend his  Read more...

A Denver Father's Day Fun Guide

June 10, 2008

It's that time of year again. Are you stumped like I am? Next year, I am tempted to make a deal on Mother's Day. No present for me, no present for you. It sure would be a heck of a lot easier, wouldn't it? But, seriously. My hubby is awesome, and I really should make the effort. So here are some things we have done in the past (since he likes stuff to do, rather than just "stuff"), plus some  Read more...

The People's Fair: Yes or No?

June 04, 2008

So, it seems like a right of passage for the start of summer, doesn't it? The People's Fair takes over Civic Center Park right after Memorial Day, just as temperatures start to rise. But is it really kid friendly? I say that depends on you and your kid. First, let's be honest. It's a MASSIVE horde of people. Which is really cool in a lot of ways, but you can also lose a child real quick. There  Read more...

Mozart, Moby or Miles: A Guide to The Denver Music Scene for Kids

May 30, 2008

Music is literally one of my favorite things on the planet. But I have to admit a teensy little secret. We have a rule in our house. No. kid. music. in. the. car. I'm sorry, but some things are sacred. But what that has given Declan instead, is a great appreciation for *all kinds* of music. He loves John Mayer. He loves Stevie Wonder. Both of whom are coming to Denver this summer. And yes, we  Read more...
